The Tersk is a Russian breed of light riding horse originating in the North Caucasus, specifically at the Tersk Stud and Stavropol stud farms. It was created in the 20th century with the aim of producing a breeding horse with Arabian characteristics but a larger and more durable body, capable of working in a variety of conditions and disciplines.

Tersk (also called Terek or Tersky)

📜 Origin and History

The breed originated in Russia in the 1920s-40s during the restoration of horse populations that had been weakened after the Russian Revolution and Civil War.

The Tersk was bred by crossing old Strelets horses, Arabian thoroughbreds and local breeds such as the Don and Kabardin.

The goal was to achieve an elegant, intelligent, hardy and versatile riding horse that would have the qualities of the Arabian type, but was adapted to more difficult conditions and work.

The breed was officially recognized in 1948 and has since served in various equestrian and sports fields outside of Russia.

After the collapse of the USSR, the population is smaller, and the breed is considered rare and endangered.

🐎 Appearance and exterior

The Tersk has a Lycurgical and elegant appearance with some signs of the Arabian type:

Constitution: a medium-sized riding horse with harmonious proportions.

Height: usually around 155–160cm at the withers (approximately 15.0–15.3 hands).

Coat color: most often gray with a silver sheen, but can also be bay (brown), chestnut (reddish), occasionally darker.

Head: light and soft with a straight or slightly concave profile, large expressive eyes and attentive ears.

Body: muscular hindquarters, wide deep chest, long and sloping shoulders - giving good reach of steps and ability to perform.

Legs: clean, strong, with good hoof structure ready for sport and longer endurance tasks.

🧠 Nature and Temperament

The Tersk is known for its gentle, friendly and intelligent nature, which makes it suitable for different types of riders:

Calm and balanced temperament - handles stress well and has a stable nature.

Intelligent and docile - quickly understands new commands and is easy to control in work and training.

Willing to cooperate - accepts training and likes to work with a person, whether in disciplines or in everyday tasks.

Calm and social - gets along well with other horses and people, which makes it a suitable companion for a family.

🏡 How they live and what are their requirements
🐴 Environment and housing

The Tersk needs:

A spacious stable with quality flooring and good ventilation.

Regular paddock or pasture - daily free movement is key to its physical and mental well-being.

A stable social environment with a herd of other horses.

🐮 Nutrition

Base: quality hay and pasture.

Supplements: concentrates according to load, the right minerals and vitamins.

Sufficient fresh water throughout the day is essential.

In heterogeneous breeds, frequent access to open-air grazing is necessary.

🧼 Care

Hoofs: regular grooming and shoeing according to load.

Teeth: check and adjust as needed.

Training: basic obedience training and balance in movements support good behavior.

Veterinary care: regular vaccinations and deworming are necessary to prevent diseases.

🩺 Health status and common diseases

The Tersk is a relatively healthy breed, but like any horse, it can have its own health requirements and risks:

🐎 Common health aspects

✔️ Long life potential: with good care, it can live up to 25–30 years.
✔️ Physical resistance: strong immune system and ability to tolerate different climatic conditions.

⚠️ Common diseases and problems

Colic: digestive problems can occur with a sudden change in food or stress.

Lameness or limb injuries: with overload or unsuitable terrain.

Skin problems: irritation can occur with neglected care of the coat or hooves.

(These problems are the same in most horses and do not depend only on the breed.)

Prevention = regular veterinary care, proper nutrition and adequate exercise.

🐎 Species or line differences

Within the Tersk breed, there are various intra-breed types that differ in the degree of robustness, body type and use:

🔹 Basic (typical)

Balanced and harmonious type with strong sporting potential.

🔹 Eastern (light)

Lighter, sometimes more agile individuals more suitable for disciplines such as dressage or endurance.

🔹 Heavier (massive)

A more massive type with a larger skeleton and stronger build.

These types are not officially "breeds", but rather lines or body variations within the breed.
