The Sardinian Anglo-Arab (Anglo-Arabo Sardo, Sardinian Anglo-Arab) is an Italian breed of riding horse from the island of Sardinia, which was created by systematically crossing local mares with Arabian, Anglo-Arabian and English Thoroughbreds in order to create a powerful, versatile and hardy sport horse. The breed has a rich tradition, especially in equestrian sports, and is used as a riding and competition horse, including triathlon (three-day eventing), show jumping, dressage and local palios.

 Sardinian Anglo-Arab

📜 Origin and history

The tradition of breeding the breed began in 1874 at the Royal Stud Farm (Regio Deposito Stalloni) in Ozieri, in northern Sardinia, where domestic mares began to be crossed with Arabian Oriental breeds with the aim of producing riding horses for military purposes in the new Italian state.

The breed was officially recognized in 1967 and a breeders' association was subsequently organized for its population.

The Sardinian Anglo-Arab is a half-breed warmblood – it combines the speed and agility of the English Thoroughbred with the endurance and stubbornness of Arabian blood.
