Mangalarga Marchador

In 1949, the ABCCMM (Associação Brasileira dos Criadores do Cavalo Mangalarga Marchador) was founded — a studbook and breeders' association that still monitors and protects the purity of the breed today.

The Mangalarga Marchador is a medium-sized horse with an athletic, elegant and solid build:

Height: approximately 147–157 cm at the withers, optimally around 152 cm.

Weight: approximately 360–500 kg (400–1100 lbs).

🐎 Exterior

Head: prominent, slightly triangular with a straight or slightly concave line and large, prominent eyes.

Neck: muscular and well-set, with a slight arch.

Chest: broad and deep — providing good lung capacity.

Back: medium length, strong and stable.

Croup and legs: well muscled with a firm attachment of the Achilles tendons, legs with hard and durable hooves.

🌈 Coat color

Various solid colors such as bay, chestnut, gray, black or others are accepted. However, pinto or specific patterns such as appaloosa are not allowed when registering the breed.

The most striking specialty of the breed are two smooth gaits (ambling) that replace the usual trot:

🐾 Marcha Batida

A diagonal, rhythmic four-beat gait that is comfortable for the rider even over long distances.

🐾 Marcha Picada

A lateral four-beat gait, characterized by an even smoother transition between the legs and less vertical movement for an even more comfortable ride.

These gaits are natural — the horse does not trot like other breeds, but goes directly into the march, making the ride very comfortable without significant jolts.

Gentle and docile (calm) - suitable for different types of riders from beginners to advanced.

A balanced diet based on grass, hay and quality feed according to activity should be provided.

Weight control is important — excessive feed combined with lack of exercise can lead to metabolic problems.

Hoof trimming and veterinary check-ups — regular visits to the veterinarian and farrier will ensure healthy feet and long-term well-being.

Exercise and training — the breed benefits from regular exercise, which supports its muscle tone and mental well-being.

Given its Brazilian origin, it tolerates both warm and tropical climates with diplomacy, but it also adapts successfully to other climatic areas when provided with sufficient shade, water and shelter according to local conditions.

These are rather general horse problems that can occur in any breed:

Laminitis — often related to improper nutrition or obesity.

Colic and digestive problems — with dietary imbalance or changes in conditions.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) — metabolic problems, especially with overweight.

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) — muscle problems related to carbohydrate metabolism.

Prevention: regular care, a balanced diet, weight control and veterinary check-ups minimize the risk of these problems.

With proper care, the Mangalarga Marchador often lives 25 to 30 years, which is above the average for the horse population.

The breed does not have separate formal "species" like some other breeds, but in practice they can be distinguished:

✔ Horses with a picada tendency - prefer a lateral, very smooth gait.

✔ Horses with a batida tendency - have a diagonal, comfortable gait.

These differences arise from the natural variability of gaits between individuals and breeding lines within the ABCCMM standard.
