1. Origin and history of the breed: The Eriskay pony is one of the oldest native pony breeds in the British Isles. It originated through isolated selection on and around Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides in northwestern Scotland, where horses were needed for everyday tasks by farmers (crofting), such as carrying peat, seaweed for manure, and carrying cargo and children.

The breed took a long time to survive the mechanization of the 19th and 20th centuries, and its population declined significantly. The first studbooks were established in the 1970s, and since then, breed organizations have been trying to protect the breed. Today, it is considered critically endangered, and centralized efforts to save it continue.

🐴 2. Appearance and Physical Characteristics
📏 Size and Proportions

The Eriskay Pony stands at approximately 124–138cm (12.0–13.2 hands) at the withers, which is about the size of a pony.

Weight is usually around 300–400kg — robust but compact.

🧱 Body and Build

It has a solid body, short back, and deep chest, making it relatively strong for its size.

The head is broad with large, friendly eyes and specially adapted nostrils for cold weather.

The legs and hooves are short and very tough, which helps them move over rough and rocky terrain.

🎨 Coat color

The most common is gray, although ponies are often born black, brown or roan and gradually turn gray with age.

Other colors (such as pieds or strong white markings) are not permitted for registration.

🧥 Coat and adaptation

They have a thick, waterproof coat that protects them in the cold, rainy and windy climate of the Hebrides.

🧠 3. Temperament and nature

Eriskay ponies are known for their calm, friendly and intelligent nature:

Kind and calm: suitable for children and gentle riders.

Willing to cooperate: they easily learn to ride and pull a cart.

Social and sensitive: they form strong bonds with people and other horses.

Due to this nature, they are often used in therapy and for riders with medical needs.

Overall, their temperament is mild, balanced and reliable, with no tendency to be nervous or aggressive, which makes them a safe choice for family and therapeutic use.

🐎 4. How they live - living conditions and requirements
🍽️ Nutrition

The Eriskay pony is undemanding to nutrition - it thrives on high-quality grass and hay and does not need a large amount of supplementary feed.

For more intensive work (riding, harnessing), the nutrition must be adjusted according to the load. (Scottish type)

🐾 Environment

Thanks to their genetics, they tolerate cold, damp and windy weather, so they thrive even in low temperatures.

When domesticated, they need shelter from extremes and a dry stand in winter, although they can spend most of their time outdoors.

Pasture with space to move is key to their mental and physical well-being.

🧼 Care

Hoofs: regular grooming or shoeing if necessary.

Veterinarian: vaccinations, deworming and dental check-ups as directed by a veterinarian.

Exercise: regular daily walks, riding or light work are ideal.

🩺 5. Health and common diseases

The Eriskay pony is considered a very healthy and hardy breed, with a natural robustness acquired from living in a harsh environment.

🧬 Health resistance

✔ Naturally healthy: has a high resistance to common diseases due to living in harsh climatic conditions.

✔ Long life: can live 25–30 years with good care.

⚠️ Possible health risks

Colic and digestive problems: with sudden changes in diet — common in all horses.

Laminitis/metabolic disorders: if overfed with rich feed without enough exercise.

Foot care: Inappropriate maintenance or unsuitable terrain can lead to hoof problems. (logging from sources)

Regular veterinary care, optimal nutrition and exercise are important to prevent these common problems.

🐴 6. Breed types and variants

The Eriskay pony is usually considered a single breed with no distinct third type varieties. However, they can vary in:

🔹 Size and build: some lines can be more robust or compact, depending on the breeding lines.

🔹 Uses:

Family vs. therapy ponies – milder temperaments suitable for children.
