1. Origin and history of the breed: The Czech Warmblood is a modern Czech breed of warmblood horse, which was created by selective breeding of native horses in the former Czechoslovakia since the mid-20th century. The breed is the most numerous breed of horse in the Czech Republic, making up approximately 23% of the domestic horse population.
The basis of the breed was created by crossing domestic marques with various foreign lines — Oriental and Spanish bloods, English Thoroughbreds, Oldenburg, Trakehner or Hanoverian stallions.
Two older breeds associated with the Czech Warmblood — the Moravian Warmblood and the Kůň Kinsky — were later part of its population and their lines live today as separate breeds.
The goal of breeding is to create a noble, correct and easily manageable horse with a healthy constitution, suitable for equestrian sport and recreational use.
🐴 2. Exterior and physical characteristics
The Czech Warmblood is a medium-sized sport horse with a harmonious and athletic conformation:
📏 Dimensions
Height at the withers: usually 165 – 175 cm.
Weight: around 600 kg.
🐎 Appearance
Body: medium to large frame with a solid skeleton, dry joints and harmonious lines.
Head: dry, with a prominent eye and a correct atlas.
Neck: well set and muscular.
Legs and hooves: correct limbs that, with proper care, support a long-term sporting career.
🎨 Coat colors
There are various colors: chestnut, chestnut, white, fawn, black, and sometimes more unusual shades.
This exterior reflects strength, flexibility and the ability to perform in sports disciplines without extreme specialization.
🧠 3. Temperament and nature
The Czech Warmblood is a balanced, docile and willing partner:
Balanced temperament: on average calm, but temperamental enough for performance.
Trusting of people: often works well with riders of different levels.
Also suitable for children and beginners: with proper training and handling, it is also suitable for less experienced people.
Intelligent and docile: easily learns new exercises and disciplines.
However, temperament can vary between individuals — some may be shy or more aggressive, which is an individual matter related to upbringing and training.
🐎 4. How they live – living conditions and care
🍽️ Nutrition
The basis is high-quality hay or grass, supplemented with balanced feed according to the load.
A balanced diet is especially important for intensive sports use.
🏡 Breeding conditions
Spacious pastures and clean stables are suitable.
Warm-blooded animals thrive better with regular exercise and training.
🐾 Care
Regular hoof trimming and veterinary check-ups are essential.
Vaccinations, deworming and dental care according to the recommendations of a veterinarian.
The Czech Warmblood is not extremely demanding, but it does require systematic care, exercise, and a stable routine.
🩺 5. Health status and common diseases
The breed is considered relatively healthy, with no known genetically determined diseases, if bred according to breed standards.
⚠️ Possible health risks
Warmbloods in general may also be prone to some common health problems:
Orthopedic problems: problems with joints, tendons, or tendon sheaths can arise during intensive training — common in sports horses.
Laminitis: a risk with an unbalanced diet or metabolic fluctuations.
Colic and digestive complications: with sudden changes in feed.
Respiratory problems: in dusty or poorly ventilated places.
Prevention — proper nutrition, even training, veterinary checks — significantly reduces these risks.
🐴 6. Types / lines within the breed
The Czech Warmblood does not have strictly official subspecies, but in practice the horses differ according to artificial selection and pedigree:
📌 1. Sport lines
Focused on show jumping, dressage and eventing.
Emphasis on correct movement mechanics and athleticism.
📌 2. Recreational lines
A more stable temperament, suitable for recreational riding or hiking.
📌 3. Combined lines
A balanced type that can handle both — sport and leisure use.
The choice of line depends on your personal needs: sport vs. recreation.
🏅 7. Use of the breed
The Czech Warmblood is an extremely versatile horse:
🐎 Sports disciplines
Show jumping, dressage and eventing — due to good movement mechanics.
🐾 Recreational riding
Ideal for recreational riding, hiking and leisure use.
🐴 Harness and work
Also suitable for sled riding and lighter work.
