The Trakehner is a warmblooded sporting horse breed originally developed at the state stud farm in Trakehner (East Prussia) in the 18th century. The breed is considered one of the lightest, noblest, and most versatile warmbloods and has significantly influenced the breeding of modern sporting breeds in Europe.

Trakehner horse

🌍 History and Origin

The breed's name comes from the Trakehnen district in East Prussia, where a state stud farm was founded as early as 1731.

The Trakehner was created by crossing older European breeds with Arabians and Thoroughbreds to achieve an athletic horse with good stamina and a smooth gait.

The breed was known for its versatility — military riding, logistics, and later sports. After World War II, breeding was resumed in Germany and from there spread throughout the world.

📏 Appearance and Physical Characteristics

The Trakehner is a well-balanced, athletically built warmblood:

Height: usually between 158 and 173 cm (approx. 15.2–17 hands).

Weight: approx. 540–635 kg.

Colors: bay, grey, chestnut, black, but also roan or tobiano in some individuals.

Body: Athletic, with long shoulders, a strong back, strong legs and a harmonious exterior that allows for dynamic movements.

Gait: Known for its "floating" stride and expressive, elastic canter, which is highly valued in dressage and eventing.

The Trakehner is a warmblood with a closed studbook, in which only approved related lines, including Arabians and Thoroughbreds, are allowed to be entered.

🧠 Nature and Temperament

The Trakehner horse has a combination of athletic energy and an intelligent temperament:

Intelligent and docile: trains well and responds to the rider's gentle commands.

Sensitive and receptive: requires patient but consistent guidance and clear routines.

Energy and courage: has good alertness and willingness to work, which is valued in sports disciplines.

Sociability: in most cases it is stable, but can be more sensitive to training or stress if not properly managed.

Due to its nature, it is suitable for experienced riders as well as for those who want to develop in more demanding equestrian disciplines.

🩺 Health status and common diseases
🟢 Health strengths

The Trakehner is generally considered a hardy and relatively healthy breed, partly due to strict selection during breeding and a harmonious body structure.
With proper nutrition, care and veterinary care, it can have a long lifespan (25–30 years).

⚠️ Common health risks

The Trakehner can also have predispositions, in particular:

Genetic disorders

Due to its heritage from Arabian lines, the breed may be susceptible to genetic diseases:

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) – failure of the immune system in foals.

Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS) – a neurological disorder with fatal consequences.

Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) – a degenerative brain disease.

These diseases can be ruled out by genetic testing of the parents during breeding.

Orthopedic and common diseases

Laminitis and tendon/joint problems with intensive training.

Gastric ulcers or colic – common in sports horses with stress or an improper diet.

Dental problems – delicate-headed breeds sometimes have problems with tooth growth.
