Starter bacteria for the aquarium

Aquarium starter bacteria are the foundation of a healthy aquarium ecosystem. Although invisible to the naked eye, fish, invertebrates and plants would not survive in an aquarium without them. Their role is to break down toxic substances, stabilize the water and prevent disease.
🔬 WHAT ARE STARTER BACTERIA?
Starter bacteria are beneficial microorganisms that participate in the so-called nitrogen cycle in the aquarium. Their main task is to:
break down waste materials (fish feces, food scraps, dead plants),
convert toxic ammonia (NH₃) and nitrites (NO₂⁻) into less harmful nitrates (NO₃⁻).
Without these bacteria, the water quickly becomes toxic.
🔁 HOW THEY WORK – THE NITROGEN CYCLE SIMPLY
1️⃣ Ammonia formation (NH₃)
Fish breathe, excrete waste
Food and plants decompose
➡️ ammonia is formed – extremely toxic even in small doses
2️⃣ Nitrite bacteria
Nitrosomonas
➡️ convert ammonia into nitrites (NO₂⁻)
Nitrites are still very dangerous
3️⃣ Nitrate bacteria
Nitrobacter / Nitrospira
➡️ convert nitrites into nitrates (NO₃⁻)
Nitrates are the least harmful and are removed:
by water exchange
by plants
👉 This is biological filtration – the heart of the aquarium.
🏠 WHERE DO THEY LIVE IN THE AQUARIUM?
Starter bacteria do not float in the water for a long time, but:
settle on filter media (foam, ceramics),
in the substrate (bottom),
on glass, decorations and plants.
📌 They are most abundant in the filter - that is why the filter is absolutely crucial.
🌡️ WHAT ARE THEIR LIFE REQUIREMENTS?
✔️ BASIC CONDITIONS
Oxygen: they are aerobic bacteria → they need water flow
Temperature: ideally 20–30 °C
pH: most work at pH 6.5–8
Waste source: without fish or food they starve
❌ WHAT HARMS THEM
chlorine and chloramines from the tap
drugs and disinfectants
filter turned off for more than a few hours
filter flushing in hot or chlorinated water
🧠 "NATURE" OF BACTERIA (PHOTOGRAPH)
Although they are microorganisms, their behavior can be summarized:
🧘 calm and stable when they have the right conditions
⚠️ sensitive to changes
🐌 they multiply slowly (several days to weeks)
🤝 they cooperate in colonies
👉 Therefore, an aquarium cannot be "run in one day", even with the best preparation.
🩺 IMPACT ON FISH HEALTH
🟢 POSITIVE IMPACT
reduces fish stress
protects gills from ammonia burn
stabilizes immunity
reduces disease incidence
🔴 WITH BACTERIA LACK
ammonia or nitrite poisoning
gasping
apathy, red gills
sudden fish deaths (so-called "new tank syndrome")
🦠 "DISEASES" OF STARTER BACTERIA
Bacteria themselves do not get sick, but they can:
die
collapse of the colony
The most common causes:
100% water change
antibiotic treatment
cleaning the filter under the tap
long-term power outage
➡️ result: collapse of biological balance
🧪 WHAT TYPES OF STARTER BACTERIA DO WE KNOW?
🧬 BY FUNCTION
Nitrosomonas – ammonia → nitrites
Nitrospira / Nitrobacter – nitrites → nitrates
Heterotrophic bacteria – organic decomposition (auxiliary)
🧴 BY FORM ON THE MARKET
1️⃣ Liquid bacteria
✔️ easy to use
❌ shorter lifespan
2️⃣ Gel / concentrated
✔️ higher number of live cultures
✔️ faster start-up
3️⃣ Dry (spores)
✔️ long shelf life
❌ slower start-up
👍 ADVANTAGES OF STARTER BACTERIA
✅ faster aquarium start-up
✅ lower risk of fish death
✅ stable water
✅ less algae
✅ healthier fish
👎 DISADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS
❌ do not replace patience
❌ do not work without a filter
❌ cheap products can be ineffective
❌ incorrect use = zero effect
🛒 HOW TO CHOOSE RIGHT STARTER BACTERIA?
✔️ WHEN CHOOSING, FOLLOW
clearly stated live nitrifying bacteria
intended for freshwater / marine aquarium
production date (the fresher, the better)
good reviews from aquarists
❗ DON'T EXPECT MIRACLES
Even the best bacteria:
will not eliminate overfeeding
will not save a poorly maintained aquarium
🧭 HOW TO USE THEM CORRECTLY?
set up an aquarium
turn on the filter and heating
add bacteria according to the instructions
do not overload with fish
test the water (NH₃, NO₂)
change the water gradually
📌 SUMMARY
Starter bacteria for the aquarium are invisible guardians of life.
Without them, there is no healthy aquarium. They are sensitive, slow, but extremely important. When used correctly:
protect fish,
stabilize water,
reduce disease,
make the aquarium a functional ecosystem.
