1. Origin and history of the breed: The Slovak Sport Pony is a relatively young breed that originated in the Slovak Republic in the second half of the 20th century. The goal of its breeding was to create a pony that would be suitable for equestrian disciplines such as dressage, jumping, endurance riding and show jumping, while also having a durable and strong constitution suitable for children, junior riders, but also for adult riders of smaller height and weight.

Slovak Sport Pony

The breed was created by interbreeding mares of noble warmblood breeds (e.g. Arabian horse, Slovak warmblood) with stallions of ponies of the Welsh pony, German riding pony and later also English half-breed. The result is a riding utility type of pony that combines athleticism, calm temperament and versatility.

Today, the Slovak Sport Pony is considered a critically endangered breed — in 2024, according to breeding sources, only about 20 breeding mares and 2 breeding stallions were registered.

Hippotherapy: its stable nature and size also make it suitable for therapeutic use in equestrian rehabilitation.

🐎 4. How they live - living conditions and requirements
🍽️ Nutrition

Feed: high-quality hay or pastoral grass; it needs adequate supplementary feed according to the load. (standard for sport ponies)

Watch out for obesity: in pony breeds it is important to regulate the energy in the diet according to the activity.

🏡 Breeding conditions

Space: sufficient pasture and space to move is key to a healthy physical and mental condition.

Stable: dry, clean and well-ventilated areas with access to water and shelter.

🧼 Care

Hoofs: regular care or shoeing according to the load.

Veterinarian: vaccinations, deworming and dental examinations according to veterinary recommendations.

🩺 5. Health status and common diseases

The Slovak Sport Pony is generally a healthy and resilient type of horse, as it was created on the basis of breeds with a strong genetic base (Arabian, Warmblood, Welsh Pony and German Riding Pony).

🩹 Possible health risks

Metabolic problems: like other pony breeds, it can be prone to laminitis or obesity if overfed without sufficient exercise. General for ponies

Colic and digestive problems: with sudden changes in feed. Common in horses

Orthopedic risks: joints and tendons should be monitored during intensive jumping or hard surface training.

Timely veterinary care and a balanced diet with exercise reduce the risk of health problems.
