The Selle Français (Cheval de Selle Français, literally "French Saddle Horse") is one of the most important European warmblood breeds developed for modern equestrian sports. It is an athletic, versatile and high-performance horse that excels in show jumping, dressage, eventing and recreational riding.
🧬 Origin and history
The breed was formalized in 1958 and the first studbook was opened in 1965 in Normandy, an area with a rich tradition of horse breeding. The basis was local French half-bloods (Anglo-Normans), which were gradually crossed with English Thoroughbreds, Anglo-Arabs, French Trotters and other European bloods to achieve the ideal combination of energy, strength and versatility.
The Selle Français was thus created as a modern sport horse, combining performance, jumping ability, excellent temperament and dressage qualities.
🐎 Appearance and physical characteristics
The Selle Français is a large, lean and muscular warmblood with a balanced conformation:
Height: approximately 15.1 – 17.3 hands (155–180cm); most commonly around 16.1 – 16.3 hands.
Body: deep chest, long bone lines, strong joints, strong musculature on the rump and shoulders.
Neck: long, muscular; supports balance and quick change of gait.
Head: expressive with intelligent expression of eyes and mobile ears.
Coat colors: bay (brown), chestnut (chestnut), gray (gray), black (black), often with white markings on the face or legs.
The SelleFrançais body is designed to combine athletic energy with endurance and elegance, important for sporting use.
🧠 Nature and temperament
The SelleFrançais is known for its balanced personality with a high teachability:
✔️ Intelligent and docile: learns new exercises quickly.
✔️ Willing and hardworking: likes to cooperate with the rider and tries to please.
✔️ Energetic, but not nervous: sensitive to aids, but generally calm even under pressure.
✔️ Good for different levels: can also be suitable for advanced amateurs, but the intense lines are especially suitable for competitions.
This combination of hardworking nature and intelligence makes the SelleFrançais a great partner not only in sports riding, but also in training and daily handling.

🏡 Life, care and demands
🐴 Nutrition
The basis is high-quality hay or pasture.
For higher loads, a balanced feed/granules is added according to the recommendations of a nutritionist.
Be careful not to overdo energy; sports horses may not need excess carbohydrates, which can increase the risk of digestive problems.
🐾 Exercise and housing
The SelleFrançais is an athletic horse that requires regular exercise - daily walks, paddock or pasture.
When housing, it is important to provide sufficient space and regular exercise to prevent muscle problems.
🪶 Grooming and care
Daily combing and checking the coat promotes healthy skin and coat.
Hooves should be checked and trimmed regularly (shod as needed).
Teeth and oral cavity - regular veterinary checks are key for optimal feeding.
🩺 Health status and common diseases
The SelleFrançais is generally a healthy breed, but with intense sports load it can be prone to some problems:
⚠️ Orthopedic and movement problems
Tendonitis, strain on ligaments and joints - often with jumping or intensive training.
Osteochondrosis (OCD) - a developmental disorder of the joints in growing horses that can be diagnosed and managed.
⚠️ Digestive problems
Gastric ulcers - common in sports horses with a stressful regime and a richer diet.
⚠️ Genetic predispositions
There is a low to moderate incidence of gene variants such as Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome (WFFS) or Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) in the population, which is recommended to be known when breeding.
👉 Prevention: regular veterinary check-ups, appropriate nutrition, proper farriery and training regimens significantly reduce the risk of chronic problems.
📈 Breed types and lines
The SelleFrançais does not have strict "types" like some breeds, but there is a different genotypic diversity according to bloodlines:
Lines with a higher proportion of English Thoroughbred → usually faster and more sensitive.
Lines with a greater emphasis on sport and jumping → robust, energetic, with an excellent ability to generate performance in show jumping.
Each line may have slightly different temperaments or predispositions, so it is important to pay attention to the specific pedigree when choosing.
