🧬 Origin and history

The Russian Don horse has a long tradition of breeding on the steppes of the Don River, where local breeders crossed horses of the domestic steppe population with oriental bloods (Arabian, Turkmen, Karabakh) and later supplemented the breeding line with Orlov Trotter, Thoroughbred and Anglo-Arabian bloods.

Historically, it was the main horse of the Cossack cavalry, which made it famous in battles - including the pursuit of Napoleon's army during the Russian campaign.

During World War I and the Russian Revolution, the population declined significantly, but subsequent restoration breeding at state stud farms and Cossack groups stabilized the breed.

Today, it is still bred mainly in the Rostov Region, Krasnodar Territory and on the steppes of the Republic of Kalmykia, while it is also recognized outside Russia in small numbers for recreational riding and breeding projects.

🐎 Appearance and physical characteristics

The Don is a medium-sized warmblood adapted for endurance and adaptation to difficult conditions:

⚖️ Body structure: balanced and harmonious, combining strength with agility.
🧠 Head: dry, with a straight or slightly dished profile and large eyes.
💪 Neck and body: well-muscled, with a deep chest for better lung capacity.

🧱 Hooves: hard and durable - suitable for long walks and uneven terrain.
🎨 Colors: most often bay, chestnut, gray, rarely black.

The Don appears solid, well-proportioned and elegant, but is not an extremely specialized type of sport horse – it prefers endurance and versatility.

The Don is a naturally hardy horse that tolerates both cold and heat, hard grazing and demanding terrain. It is suitable for pastures or paddocks with plenty of exercise, which supports its condition and psychological well-being.

Base: high-quality hay and pasture.

Supplements: grains or granules according to activity and condition.

Water and minerals: constant access to clean water is essential.

The Don has low food requirements, because historically it has fed on modest steppe grazing without significant supplements.

Combing and grooming: regular combing of the coat and skin checks.

Hooves: regular trimming or blacksmithing.

Veterinarian: preventive vaccinations and deworming.

The Russian Don is known for its robustness and good health profile, developed by selection in a demanding natural environment.

The Russian Don Horse (Don) is not divided into official subspecies like some other breeds.

Modern conservation lines: in Russia and Europe, maintaining the traditional type for recreational riding.

The differences are more individual than formal.

❗ Some individuals have straight shoulders - which can reduce the length of the stride and slightly affect the efficiency of the gait.
