The Percheron is one of the oldest breeds of draft horses in Europe. It is known for its size, strength, intelligence and calm nature. It originates from the Perche region of France, from where it gets its name.

Percheron

🌍 History and Origin

Origin: Le Perche region, Normandy, France — the first Percherons appear in written records around the 8th century.

Breed Development: Initially used as war horses, later as farm and draft horses for carts and plows.

Distribution: In the 1800s, the breed spread to the USA and Canada, where it became very popular for farm work, transportation, and logging.

🐎 Appearance and Physical Characteristics

The Percheron is a large, robust draft horse with a balanced and strong constitution:

Height: Usually 16–17 hands (1.63–1.73 m at the withers).

Weight: Approximately 800–1200 kg depending on type and body constitution.

Coat Colors: Traditionally gray and black; in the USA, brown, brindle or tiger shades may also be allowed.

Skeleton: strong, wide chest, strong hind legs, short and strong back, overall harmonious body structure.

Percherons do not have richly "feathered" legs like Clyde horses, which simplifies care and reduces the risk of some skin problems.

🧠 Nature and temperament

Percherons are known as "gentle giants" — giants with a calm, stable and reliable nature:

Calm and peaceful: most individuals are calm and handle traffic well, including urban environments or public events.

Intelligent and docile: they quickly understand tasks and respond well to positive training methods.

Willing to work: they have a natural will to cooperate with humans and are very resistant to stress.

Energy: compared to some other draft breeds, they have relatively higher energy and better mobility.

Their size can make them more difficult to cultivate for the novice, but with proper care and training, they are suitable for intermediate riders.

🩺 Health and Common Diseases

The Percheron is generally a robust breed, but like any large horse, they can have certain health conditions:

🟡 Common Health Risks

1. Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM / EPSM)

A genetic disease of muscle metabolism; causes glycogen storage and painful muscle problems.

2. "Shivers"

A neurological condition associated with hyperflexion of the hind legs; progresses with age and can make tasks such as lifting a leg difficult.

3. Tendinitis and Joint Problems

Because of their large weight, tendons and joints can be put under greater strain — especially if they are not cared for properly.

4. Laminitis and obesity

Overfeeding can cause hoof inflammation (laminitis), especially in "easy keepers".

5. Respiratory problems

Sensitive to dust and poorly ventilated stables or halls.

🍏 Care and nutrition

Proper care is the key to a long and healthy life for these giants:

🥕 Nutrition

Percherons need high-quality hay and access to fresh water at all times.

Due to their size, they need a larger amount of feed than regular horses - up to 25–30 kg of hay per day when actively working.

Grains and energy-rich foods should be dosed judiciously to prevent obesity and laminitis.

🐾 Care

Hoofs: regular trimming or shoeing every 6–8 weeks.

Veterinary care: vaccinations, teeth cleaning and deworming are standard.

Space: a large stable or pasture with a partner/horse is ideal for their psyche.

🐎 Advantages and disadvantages of the breed
✔️ Advantages

Stable temperament and high intelligence.

Flexible use: from draft work, through agritourism to sledding or riding for heavier riders.

Long life: they can live and work until the age of ~25–30.

Low to average care requirements due to their robustness.

❗ Disadvantages

Higher cost of nutrition and care due to size.

Potential genetic diseases associated with large draft breeds.

They require an experienced owner for training and handling, especially if they are adult riders or work.

🐴 How to Choose a Percheron

When buying or adopting, it is good to consider:

Veterinary health check: focus on joints, muscles and respiration.

Temperament and behavior: calm nature and willingness to cooperate are a great advantage.

Training level: experience with riding or draft work increases the value of the individual.

Suitable environment: extensive pastures, plenty of exercise and a good diet are enough.

📌 Summary

The Percheron is a peaceful, strong and intelligent draft horse with a rich history, which is suitable not only for farm work, but also for recreational riding or logging in the forests. Its calm nature and hardworking nature make it popular among breeders and riders. Proper nutrition, regular hoof care and health are the basis for a long and productive life of these horses
