One of the most interesting Italian horse breeds, renowned for its endurance, hard work and impressive appearance, this horse is a great example of a hardy breed that was created to survive in harsh conditions.

Murgese

1. Origin and history of the breed

The Murgese (Cavallo Murgese or Cavallo delle Murge) is an Italian breed of horse that originates from the shallow, calcareous Le Murge region in northern Puglia and Basilicata in southern Italy.

Historically, the Murgese were used as agricultural draft horses, riding horses and military horses, especially during the Spanish rule in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The breed was created by crossing local horses with Arabian, Berber and Neapolitan blood, which gave it resistance, energy and agility.

In the 1920s, a stud book was established (1926, officially since 1948) to fix the standard characteristics of the breed.

Today, the Murgese is considered an Italian genetic resource and a protected breed with programs to preserve biodiversity.

🐴 2. Appearance and physical characteristics
📏 Dimensions

Height at the withers: usually 150–168cm (15.0–16.2r: 150–168cm) – males usually taller, mares slightly shorter.

Weight: approx. 500–600kg or more depending on the body constitution.

🧱 Body structure

The Murgese has a compact, robust and harmonious frame with an emphasis on strength and endurance:

Head: slightly concave or straight (sometimes called a "Roman nose"), with an intelligent expression.

Neck: strong, well set in.

Chest: broad and deep, strong lungs and respiratory apparatus.

Back and rump: firm and well muscled, suitable for riding and working.

Legs and hooves: short, strong joints and hard, black hooves that tolerate rough terrain well.

🎨 Coat colors

Most often black (uniform black) or dark roan; sometimes dark chestnut or roan are also found.

🧠 3. Temperament and character

The Murgese is a spirited but calm horse with an excellent ability to cooperate with its rider:

✔ Even-tempered and calm - does not tend to be nervous or have violent reactions.
✔ Docile and obedient - learns easily, which is advantageous in training.
✔ High intelligence and willingness to work - responds well to instructions.
✔ Good sociability and loyalty - easily establishes a relationship with humans and other horses.
✔ Energy and control - lively enough for movement and work, but not overly nervous.

This temperament makes the Murgese an ideal partner for riding, hiking, but also field work or pulling light carts.

🐎 4. How they live – living conditions and requirements
🐄 Nutrition

The Murgese is an "easy keeper" (easy to feed) — it thrives well even on poor pasture, but with increased work it needs a balanced diet with enough fiber and energy.

🌦️ Environment

The original Murge plateau is extremely demanding: hot dry summers and cold windy winters, which transformed the breed into a hardy and adaptable type.

Today, they are best suited to space, pasture and free movement, but with good care they will also adapt to stables.

🐾 Care

Hoofs: regular cleaning and inspection, shoeing according to work.

Veterinary care: vaccination, deworming and dental check-up.

Exercise: at least light training or free movement daily to stay mentally and physically healthy.

🩺 5. Health status and common diseases

The Murgese is known for its hardiness and health, thanks to living in a harsh environment, which has increased its resistance:

🩹 Health benefits

✔ High resistance to common diseases — problems such as respiratory or intestinal infections are less common in them.
✔ Hard hooves and strong legs — less prone to lameness without neglecting care.
✔ Long and productive life — many individuals remain active even after 25 years.

⚠️ Risks and diseases

Overweight/obesity — they can gain weight if overfed without adequate exercise.

Joint problems and arthritis — with excessive intensive work or in old age.

Sun damage to the coat/skin — especially in black individuals in strong sunlight.

🐴 6. Types and varieties

The Murgese is not divided into officially recognized subspecies of the breed, but:

🟡 Classic Murgese

With a characteristic black or dark coat, robust build and versatile abilities.

🟢 Baroque type / sports-oriented

In advanced breeding, individuals appear with proportions and movements more suitable for dressage and equestrian sports, further used in tourism and pulling.

The differences are more functional and individual, not formal official lines.

🏅 7. Use of the breed

The Murgese has a very wide range of uses:

🐎 Riding and trekking

Suitable for tourist riding, long walks and everyday riding.

🐄 Farm work and light pulling

Traditionally used for pulling work, pulling carts and helping in the fields.

🎓 Training and sports

Suitable for rider training, sports disciplines such as lower dressage and flat work.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family and recreational riding

Thanks to its calm nature, it is also suitable for family riding.

📊 8. Advantages and disadvantages of the breed
✅ Advantages

✔ High resistance and frugality to poor diet.
✔ Versatile use - from riding to work and sports.
✔ Calm, docile nature - ideal for many riders.
✔ Long life and robust health - less prone to common diseases.

❌ Disadvantages

✘ Potential for obesity if the feed is overpriced.
✘ Joint problems with excessive load - requires adequate training and care.
