1. Origin and history of the breed: The Mérens horse (French: Cheval Mérens or Ariégeois) is an ancient breed originating from the Pyrenees and the mountainous areas around the Ariège River in southwestern France. Its ancestors probably lived in this area thousands of years ago and resemble the small mountain horses from cave paintings. The breed has also been influenced by oriental blood, probably Arabian or Berber horses. Targeted breeding of the originally wild horses began in the early 20th century and a stud book was established in 1948
The Mérens is traditionally associated with hard work in the mountains, where it served as a pack horse (draught horse), for earthworks, in the forest or for smuggling goods. Today it is bred as a riding horse, but it still retains its adaptation to difficult terrain.
🐴 2. Exterior and physical appearance
The Mérens is a compact and solidly built horse/pony that radiates strength and health.
📏 Size and proportions
Height at the withers: approx. 132–148cm (sometimes slightly higher in modern types).
Weight: usually 400–500kg for adults.
🐎 Body and structure
The Mérens has:
Head: dry, with a straight or slightly concave line.
Neck: medium long to short, well muscled.
Chest: deep and broad.
Back and rump: muscular, firm, with a low-set tail.
Legs: short, firm and strong with large, hard hooves that often do not need shoeing.
🎨 Coat and color
Color: mostly black — in winter it may have a slightly reddish tinge.
Winter coat: thick with a so-called "beard" on the chin, a thick mane and a tail typical of mountain breeds.
Modern lines can be taller and more athletic, while traditional lines remain compact and robust.
🧠 3. Temperament and nature
The Meren horse is known for its calmness, docility and willingness to cooperate:
Even and calm: it responds well to training and can be a very reliable partner under the saddle.
Intelligent and docile: it learns quickly and can function in a variety of tasks — from riding to work to hiking.
Suitable for children and adults: its stable nature makes it suitable even for less experienced riders, if it is properly socialized.
Social and attentive: it forms strong bonds with humans and other horses.
Thanks to its natural cooperation and patience, it is a popular horse for recreational riding, trekking and family use.
🐎 4. How they live - living conditions and requirements
🍽️ Nutrition and care
The Mérens is unpretentious in terms of diet:
It can thrive on poor pasture and regular hay even without rich feed.
It is not demanding on feed, but adequate nutrition is important, especially if the horse is actively used.
🌦️ Breeding conditions
It tolerates cold and humid climates very well - it is originally a mountain horse.
On the other hand, extremely hot weather does not do it well, so in warm climates it needs shade, water and shelter.
Spacious enclosures + pastures with plenty of exercise are ideal.
🩺 5. Health status and common diseases
The Meren horse is generally a healthy and robust breed that maintains a strong constitution even with minimal care:
🧬 Strengths
✔ High resistance: tolerant of harsh weather and minor food fluctuations.
✔ Strong hooves: often do not need horseshoes if they live in natural conditions.
✔ Long life: with good care, they often live 25–30 years.
⚠️ Common health risks
Laminitis: as with most horses, with improper nutrition or obesity.
Colic: digestive problems with sudden changes in diet.
Reaction to heat: less tolerant of high temperatures, therefore needs protection from heat.
Regular veterinary care, proper feeding and hoof trimming help maintain health and minimize risks.
🐴 6. Types / variants of Mérens horses
The Mérens is not traditionally divided into a large number of official "types", but in practice we know:
🟡 Traditional mountain type
Smaller and lighter, rather original, adapted to the harsh mountain terrain.
🟢 Modern sports type
Sometimes taller and more athletic, more suitable for equestrian disciplines and tourism.
The differences are mostly in conformation and use, not in a separate formalized subspecies.
🏅 7. Use of the breed
The Mérens is an extremely versatile breed used in various areas:
🐎 Riding and tourism
Trail / trekking / recreational riding - thanks to its sure footing and comfortable stride.
Dressage and performance riding: some individuals also apply themselves well here.
🐄 Work
Historically used for farm work, hauling loads and wood.
👨👩👧 Family Use
Thanks to its calm nature, it is also suitable for family riding and children.
📊 8. Advantages and disadvantages of the breed
✅ Advantages
✔ Resistance and hardiness: it can handle even difficult climatic conditions.
✔ Versatility: suitable for riding, hiking, work and family.
✔ Calm, docile nature: ideal for less experienced riders.
✔ Low demands: it can thrive in relatively simple conditions.
❌ Disadvantages

🎯 9. How to Choose a Meren Horse
If you are considering buying one:
✔ Determine the purpose: trekking/recreational riding vs. light work or sport.
✔ Temperament: observe behavior on the ground and under the saddle.
