The Kladruby Horse (Kladruber), often referred to as the Old Kladruby Horse, is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world and the oldest native Czech breed. It is a Baroque warmblood horse that was bred to be a Galakarosier — a representative carriage horse for the imperial court. It is a very rare and culturally significant breed associated with the history of Europe.

📜 Origin and History

The Kladruby Horse has been bred continuously for over 400 years at the Kladruby nad Labem National Stud Farm in the Czech Republic.

The breed was founded in 1579 by Emperor Rudolf II with the aim of producing noble carriage horses for the Habsburg court.

The original breed was created by crossing old Spanish, Italian and Neapolitan horses with local blood, creating a type of Baroque horse with a typical prominent musculature, a pronounced profile and an elegant gait.

In the past, the breed was used in imperial processions, ceremonial carriages and for representative purposes, not in the army or in agriculture.

During the 20th century, the breed faced decline and genetic "narrow population" — today it is still rare, with an average number of several thousand individuals in the world.

The Kladruby horse is considered a national cultural monument and its breeding is also protected by UNESCO within the Kladruby nad Labem region.

🐎 Appearance and exterior

The Kladruby horse is typical for its baroque but noble body structure, which reflects its ceremonial function:

📏 Size and body

Height: approx. 160–170+ cm at the withers (sometimes up to around 1.73 m).

Weight: usually around 600–700 kg.

Body shape: massive but elegant; deep chest, strong back and muscular buttocks.

🐴 Head and limbs

Head profile: slightly convex (so-called Roman nose) — inherited from baroque ancestors.

Neck: long, well-muscled and strongly arched.

Legs and hooves: strong, hard and well-shaped, designed for heavier work in a harness.

Coat: traditionally only two colors — gray (gradually lightening with age) and black, according to historical ceremonial regulations.

Mane and tail: thick, long and often excellent for spectacular performances.

The gait of the Kladruber is elastic, rhythmic and with a high leg lift, which was required when riding in front of a carriage.

🧠 Nature and temperament

The Kladruber horse is known for its exceptionally stable character, which has been shaped by hundreds of years of breeding for ceremonial use:

✔️ Calm and balanced — able to work in a noisy environment without nervousness.

✔️ Intelligent and docile — easily understands instructions and responds to subtle signals from the rider or handler.
✔️ Cooperative and tolerant — tends to be very reliable when working in a harness and in collective performances.
✔️ Good social behavior in a group — suitable for a herd, also works well with other horses.

Thanks to its nature, the Kladruber is ideal not only for the world of harness, but also for recreational riding or dressage, and is even used in therapy as a partner in hippotherapy.

🏡 How they live and what are their requirements
🐴 Environment and housing

They need spacious stables with enough space for their large body and regular free range or pasture for optimal mental and physical condition.

Due to their massive body structure, it is important to provide quality pads and protection to support the joints.

🍀 Nutrition

Quality hay and pasture should form the basis.

Depending on the load, cereals or meal, minerals and vitamins are supplemented.

Fresh water is always available, given their size and metabolism.

🧼 Care

Regular hoof care — farrier treatments and shoeing according to the type of work.

Dental care — dental checks and adjustments as needed.

Veterinary preventive care — vaccinations, deworming and weight monitoring.

🏇 Training and use

Kladrubers are ideal for harness, combined driving, ceremonial riding, but also for classical dressage or baroque performances.

Thanks to their calm nature, they can also be suitable for riders with less experience in recreational riding.

🩺 Health and common diseases

The Kladruby horse is generally hardy and robust, but like any larger breed, it requires special care:

✔️ Generally healthy

Strong skeletal structure, good condition and high lifespan — often up to 25–30 years or more with good care.

High fertility and stamina.

⚠️ Potential problems

Joint problems (e.g. arthrosis of the joints) can arise from excessive stress without adequate training.

Hoof problems — from improper shoeing or walking on hard surfaces without adequate care.

Overweight — due to its large body and energy intake, weight and nutrition need to be monitored.

There are no significant specific genetic diseases registered for the breed, but with such a small population, genetic diversity and prevention of inbreeding are monitored.

🐎 Types/pure lines of the breed

There are no "distinct breeds" within the Kladruby Horse, but two main traditional color lines:

🟡 Gray line

Historically associated with imperial ceremonies and court carriages.

Gray horses are born darker and gradually lighten to an almost white color with age.

⚫ Black line

Traditionally used in high-ranking church ceremonies and other official events.

Their color remains dark and shiny throughout their lives.
