The Caucasian Kabardinian is one of the most interesting and oldest horse breeds in the world, known for its hardiness and excellent ability in difficult conditions. It originates from the Caucasus region, where it was originally used for various purposes, such as logging, riding, and military.
1. Origin and history of the breed
The Kabardian horse (Kabarda, Kabardin or Circassian horse) originated in the North Caucasus, mainly in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (present-day Russia). It is an ancient breed that was formed by natural selection in mountainous conditions and has been known since the 16th century.
For centuries, it was used by the inhabitants of the Caucasus to transport goods and people through mountain passes and as a military and working horse. In the 19th century, the breed was improved by crossing with thoroughbreds and oriental horses, which gave it greater endurance and versatility.
Today, the Kabarda is also a registered breed in the Russian stud book and is used for various equestrian purposes at home and abroad.
🐴 2. Appearance and Physical Characteristics
📏 Size and Proportions
Height at the withers: 14.2–15.1 hands (≈142–152cm).
Weight: Average 400–500kg for adults.
🧱 Body and Structure
The Kabardian horse has a solid and athletic frame:
Head: clean, often with a pronounced "ram" profile.
Neck: medium length, well muscled.
Chest: deep and broad, providing good lung capacity.
Back & rump: strong, muscular and suitable for long rides.
Legs: dry, with hard hooves that can handle rough mountain terrain without the need for frequent shoeing.
🎨 Coat Color
The most common colors are bay, dark brown, black and occasionally gray. White markings are rare.
🧠 3. Temperament and character
The Kabardian horse is intelligent, calm and reliable — a typical representative of a mountain breed with good psychological balance:
Calm and prudent: it does not have nervous reactions, because it was selected for work in extreme terrain.
Intelligent and docile: it learns commands easily and is willing to work with the rider.
Trusting, strongly oriented towards people: it requires consistent leadership, but usually cooperates well.
Excellent sense of orientation: it can often find the right path in fog, darkness or difficult terrain.
Thanks to the combination of stability and resistance, it is suitable for various riding activities, but also for work in difficult terrain.
🐎 4. How they live - living conditions and demands
🍽️ Nutrition
Kabardian horses are easy to maintain — "easy keeper", which means that they maintain good condition even with a simple diet. However, they require high-quality hay and pasture, while training or work under load requires adaptation of the feed.
🏔️ Environment and care
Pasture and free movement: large pastures are ideal, where the horse can spend most of the day.
Adapted terrain: especially suitable for mountainous areas or rugged landscapes, where its stability and gait will stand out.
Stable: dry and well-ventilated areas are important if kept in stables in winter.
🐾 Education and training
Kabardins can be a bit stubborn at first — so consistent and patient training is necessary. However, with good education, they become reliable riding partners.
🩺 5. Health status and common diseases
The Kabardian horse is generally very healthy and resistant to the breed, thanks to living in extreme climatic conditions:
🧬 Health strengths
✔ Robust constitution with good immunity.
✔ Hard hooves and strong legs – naturally resistant to lameness.
✔ Ability to maintain fitness even in low temperatures and high loads.
⚠️ Possible health risks
Joint strain and laminitis — with improper feeding or obesity, which can occur when staying in stables without exercise.
Spine or tendon problems — in older horses or with excessive training. (Inference from general care of large horses)
Digestive complications (colic) with sudden changes in diet or stress. (General equine care)
With proper care, balanced nutrition and appropriate training, these risks are significantly reduced.
🐴 6. Types / variants of the Kabardian horse
The Kabardian horse does not have a number of officially recognized separate subspecies, but in breeding several functional types can be distinguished according to exterior and use:
🟡 Basic type
A typical mountain horse with an emphasis on resistance, stability and endurance.
🟢 Oriental type
With a greater influence of Arabian and Oriental bloodlines — a finer frame, a more energetic temperament and greater agility.
🟣 Stronger universal type
A more robust variant suitable for heavier work, sledding or agricultural work. (Inference from historical use)
These variations are not separate breeds, but breeding lines within the Kabardian horse.
🏅 7. Use of the breed
The Kabardian horse is extremely versatile:
🐎 Riding horse - ideal for difficult terrain and tourism.
🚶 Endurance and long journeys – excels in endurance even over hundreds of kilometers.
🐄 Working in mountainous areas or transporting goods – traditional use.
🚜 Easy pulling and driving – in the past also used to help with agriculture.
