📜 Origin and history

History: The breed originated in the Jura and Franche-Comté regions and is considered one of the oldest French draft horse breeds. Its ancestors came from horses imported by the Burgundians as early as the 4th century, and over the centuries the breed was influenced by crosses with other draft types, such as the Percheron, Boulonnais or Ardennais.

Traditional use: Originally used for farm work, forestry, logging, or as a military horse pulling cannons and supplies.

Modern use: With the advent of mechanization, its numbers decreased, but the breed has been revived by breeding efforts and is now used in recreational riding, attractions, tourism and traditional craft activities.

📏 Appearance and exterior

Physical characteristics:

Size: 1.45 to 1.65m at the withers (14.3–16.1 hands).

Weight: 650–800kg.

Type: A light draft horse with a compact and muscular body, deep chest and short but strong back.

Head and neck: Massive head, straight neck and well-developed muscles.

Legs: Short, strong and well-muscled, with minimal "feathering" around the hooves, which gives it good stability and a sure gait.

Coat colour: Most often dark brown (chestnut) or bay (brown), often with fawn or silver manes and tails due to the Silver gene; they can also be black or bay-silver.

The Comtois is known for its gentle, reliable and calm nature, which makes it a very pleasant partner for different types of people and tasks:

Calm and balanced: reacts calmly even to a busy environment and does not show extreme fright.

Trainable and willing to work: likes to cooperate with humans and is able to perform various tasks, from pulling a cart to recreational riding.

Patient and tolerant: also suitable for beginners, children or animal therapy.

Endurance: despite its compact build, it has good endurance when working, especially in hilly or forest terrain.

🐴 Shelter and space

They need a spacious stable with a dry floor and good ventilation.

Daily paddock or pasture are very important, as these horses love movement and freedom.

High-quality hay or pasture is essential.

For intensive work, concentrated feed is added as needed.

Water must be available at all times (min. 30–40l per day).

Regular hoof care and trimming are key.

Daily check of healthy coat, skin, feet and general condition.

Silver gene: is associated with specific eye anomalies (Multiple Congenital Ocular Anomalies) that can affect vision if present in a homozygous form.

Epidermolysis bullosa junctionalis: a genetic disease, the so-called "red leg disease", which is known in the breed, although it is relatively rare.

Sickle hocks (crooked hind joints): in some individuals there may be a genetically increased tendency, which can affect gait.
