The Camargue Horse (Cheval Camargue) is a unique French breed of small and robust horse, traditionally found in the Camargue region — the delta landscape of the Rhône River in southern France. These horses often live a semi-feral life in marshes, swamps and salt marshes, and their remarkable hardiness has shaped their character and physical characteristics over the centuries.
🌍 History and Origin
The Camargue is one of the oldest horse breeds in Europe, having developed in the isolated environment of the Camargue wetlands. The origin of this type of horse dates back to the ancestors of domestic horses, who adapted to the harsh conditions — mud, salt water, wind and irregular grazing. These horses lived in the wild with almost no human care until the 20th century, when they began to be bred in an organized manner and registered as a modern breed.
The breed was officially recognized in 1978, when a stud book was established and the Camargue Horse Breeders Association was created.
📏 Appearance and Physical Characteristics
The Camargue horse is compact, but strong and muscular:
Height at the withers: approx. 1.35–1.50 m (13.1–14.3 hands), a smaller horse, but quite robust even for adult riders.
Weight: usually 300–400kg.
Coat: typically grey to white in adults; foals are born darker (dark brown, black or chestnut) and their coat gradually lightens as they mature.
Body: short back, deep chest, muscular hind legs and wide, strong hooves, which allow them to stand firm in marshy conditions.
Characteristic coat: thick mane and abundant tail protect against insects and inclement weather.
Overall, these horses have a compact and functional body that perfectly reflects their life in the wetlands.
🧠 Temperament and behavior
Camargue horses are known for their independent, intelligent and calm nature:
They have a high level of independence and balance, which is a result of living in the wild.
Calm and balanced, yet intelligent and quick to learn — they are suitable for a variety of riding tasks.
Good herd cooperation and strong social bonds are natural, as in the wild they live in family herds called manades.
When domesticated, they can be calm and trusting, but their independence can lead to stubbornness if not well-managed.
Their temperament is important to understand when working or riding — they are willing, but not always obedient without proper training.
🩺 Health and common diseases
Camargue horses are known for their strong healthy constitution and resilience, which is the result of generations of living in a free and harsh environment.
🟢 Health strengths
High resilience: they tolerate wet, windy and variable weather well without significant health problems.
Strong hooves: developed for stability in wet and uneven habitats, they rarely need horseshoes if they live in natural conditions.
Longevity: with proper care, they often reach 20–25 years or more.
⚠️ Risks and diseases
Although they have no known specific genetic diseases, they can be exposed to:
Skin problems: such as sweet itch or mud fever (skin inflammation due to moisture and insects), especially in flooded areas.
Joint and leg problems: when standing for long periods in a damp environment without sufficient dry shelter.
Common equine diseases: such as colic or respiratory diseases, which can be minimized with good care and hygiene.
In the natural habitat, these problems are less common thanks to natural selection and free movement.3
🍏 Life and care - requirements
Camargue horses have relatively low requirements due to their adaptation:
🐴 Environment
A pasture or paddock with space to move around, ideally with a hay reserve for the winter, suits them best.
Although they are resistant to moisture, dry shelter helps prevent skin and respiratory problems in domestication.
🥕 Nutrition
In nature, they feed on lower-quality vegetation, grass and wetland plants, which makes them undemanding animals for food.
In domestication, it is advisable to provide quality hay and pasture, supplemented with vitamins and minerals according to the load and season.
🐾 Care
Regular veterinary checks, vaccinations and deworming.
Hoof checks and hygiene, especially in rainy and humid periods.
Socialization and exercise: these horses thrive best in a herd and with the possibility of free movement.
🐎 Uses of the Camargue Horse
The Camargue is a very versatile and practical horse:
✔️ Grazing and herding work: originally used by French cowboys (guardians) to herd bulls and work with cattle.
✔️ Riding and hiking: suitable for off-road riding, hiking and recreational riding.
✔️ Dressage and leisure activities: thanks to its stable nature and obedience.
🟢 Breed advantages
✔️ Excellent resistance and adaptability - can handle extremely wet and swampy environments.
✔️ Undemanding in nutrition and care compared to other breeds.
✔️ Calm and intelligent nature, suitable for different types of riders.
✔️ Strong health and long life without significant genetic diseases.
✔️ Strong social instinct and ability to work in a herd.
❗ Disadvantages and challenges
❗ It is not a typical tall sporting breed, so it may be less suitable for intensive jumping or high dressage.
❗ It requires proper socialization, otherwise it can be stubborn due to its independent nature.
❗ Hygiene requirements during domestication are higher due to the humid environment, which can cause skin problems.
❗ Smaller population and specific environment
